The Nairobi County Government has partnered with two German firms to manage solid waste collection and generate energy from the same.

The partnership will see ISO International Development and Consulting GmBH collect separate waste while Sustainable Energy Management UG (SEM) will turn the waste into energy.

SEM intends to use about 1,000 tonnes of waste out of the 2,000 tonnes collected daily to generate 70 megawatts of electricity per hour.

According to Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, the project also intends to create over 1,000 jobs per one million residents in project one and 250 directly on site in project two.

“The energy sector has been put forward as a key booster of the achievement of Vision 2030. Our government will provide everything possible to ensure good implementation of this project,” said Dr Kidero.

The defunct City Council of Nairobi has for long considered outsourcing garbage collection services from the private sector.

The then Town Clerk, Mr Roba Duba, said that services like solid waste collection would be best provided by the private sector.

“The Project offers numerous opportunities and benefits to Nairobi,” said Dr Kidero.
