Beatrice Akumi of Amani Craft told Word Is, “So far she has sent us two letters from her lawyers saying that she owns the rights to making African and Kenyan crafts and beads and has demanded we destroy our stock.

“We don’t know what to do. We are waiting to see what she will do first because we don’t understand what she is talking about. The same thing we do is being sold at Maasai Market by many other people. We will wait and see where she will take us.”

Beatrice says that Penny probably heard about them from because they sell their wares abroad.

According to Amani Craft website, the women group, in a statement, are asking for help in dealing with this legal issue. Adding that after receiving the legal letter, they “are very frightened but want to fight this bullying tactic, we are simply a group of women who are trying to make a better life for our children.”

The statement continued, “If you are a lawyer and would like to help us with advice could you please call or email Beatrice, we can’t pay much but can make very nice sukuma wiki and you are welcome to join us.”
