The committee finalised the decision when the proposal was approved by 8 votes to 5 in a meeting on Tuesday, city corporation sources said.

The children and pregnant women will be entitled to broad health services, as well as prenatal care and medical services at the same price as the inhabitants of Helsinki.

The new provision will come into effect from the beginning of 2014, said sources.

An unauthorized person refers those who live in the country without a valid visa or residence permit.

Presently the illegal immigrants are getting only emergency treatment from public healthcare centres in addition to normal medication from a voluntary clinic in the city.

Helsinki has an estimated 5,000 inhabitants without proper documents.
