Magic Flute

Though she started singing at a very young age, the chance for Lind to make her professional debut came at the age of 19 when she appeared as the Queen of the Night in the opera “The Magic Flute” by Wolfgang Mozart at the Vienna State Opera. This performance brought her wide acclaim and opened the doors for her to launch an international career in opera.

She is associated with the Italian vocal style of bel canto with her performances in famous roles like Lucia in “Lucia di Lammermoor” (Lucia of Lammermoor), Amina in “La Sonnambula” (The Sleepwalker), Marie in “La Fille du Regiment” (The daughter of the regiment).

Lind has also performed the roles of Elvira in “I Puritani” (The Puritans), Violetta in “La Traviata” (The Fallen Woman) and Gilda in “Rigoletto.”

She also performs roles in operas written by German composers like that of Konstanze in Mozart’s “Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail” (The Abduction from the Seraglio) and Sophie in “Der Rosenkavalier” (The Knight of the Rose) by Richard Strauss.

Apart from singing opera, Lind is also an accomplished concert singer and has appeared in respected works like Mozart’s “C Minor Mass”, Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Missa Solemnis”, Joseph Haydn’s “The Creation” and “Camina Burana” by Carl Orff. In her recitals, she sings songs by Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Wolf, Brahms and Strauss.

In the course of her career, Eva Lind has developed a wide discography with the release of many complete opera recordings, more than 10 solo recitals and three DVDs including performances with Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and the Vienna Boys Choir.

Her latest album “Bijoux” released in 2014 features recordings of her favourite songs by French composers like Massenet, Faure, Debussy and Satie.

Silvia Belfiore is an Italian pianist who has given more than 470 concerts as soloist and chamber performer in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France, Greece, Peru, Spain, South Africa, Ethiopia and India. In May 2014, she played at a concert called “Homage to Africa” at the Italian Cultural Institute in Nairobi.

Belfiore has been drawn to the influence of African rhythms on classical music and often adds the music of various African composers to her concerts.

Her 2012 album called “Omaggio all’Africa” features the works of composers like South African Stefan Grove, the Ghanaian-American Fred Onovwerosuoke, Kwabena Nketia who is also Ghanaian, Girma Yifrashewa of Ethiopia and Nigerian Joshua Uziogwe.

She graduated with top honours in music from the University of Bologna and has also received various awards for her achievements including the “Laboratorio Lirico” for contemporary music awarded by Teatro Alessandria in Italy. Belfiore teaches piano and music history in several conservatories of music in Italy and Portugal.

Next week’s concert by Eva Lind featuring Belfiore on piano is organised by the Austrian Embassy in Kenya and takes place at the Muthaiga Country Club Ballroom on July 16 from 6.30 pm with an entry fee of Sh1,000 for members of the club while guests will pay Sh1,300.
