Italy’s Interior Minister Angelino Alfano has vowed that he’ll never allow immigrants to steal jobs from Italians.
He said that as long as he’ll be the Interior Minister, he’ll never approve a law that would make even one Italian youth lose their job to an immigrant.
Mr Alfano, who is also the Secretary General of the New Centre-Right (NCD) party, said there was a high level of unemployment in the country and discouraged foreigners from coming here to look for work.
It is extremely disappointing to hear such statements from a minister whose ministry is in charge of immigration and integration matters.
To say that Mr Alfano’s statements are irresponsible is an understatement. Such statements can easily fuel conflicts between Italians and immigrants.
Mr Alfano must be made aware that as a government minister, he has the duty of promoting social harmony and must therefore refrain from making similar statements in the future.
He should also be in a position to know that immigrants don’t steal jobs from Italians. I challenge him to produce data supporting this claim.
Mr Alfano’s vow to stop immigrants from stealing jobs from Italians wasn’t a gaffe. It was instead a revelation of his anti-immigrant attitude which he shares with many other leading centre-right and extreme right politicians.
Such an attitude is extremely harmful to the coalition government.
Prime Minister Matteo Renzi whose Democratic Party has been fighting for immigrant friendly policies, must not turn a blind eye to this issue.
Mr Alfano should either resign from the government or be moved away from the ministry in charge of immigration matters.
